Newgale Sunday 22/8/04

Another dawn rain on Newgale on the back of a very good forecast (again) . The bat phone was red hot on Sat with a few members of the B.W.A (barry .winsurf arseholes ). making their interest known in another big day at "the big wave beach " .
So Robin got to my place early in morning and the bat mobile was loaded up and hit the road flat out on the bat-turbo ((80mph)) reaching Newgale in 2hrs . As we came over the hill driving down to beach the water was looking dead and certainly no-gale again.
As we approached the car park spotted a big camper with gear on the roof immediately though it might me Jonny and both of us started barking like mad dogs! , but it was Kitto,s wagon with all the curtains drawn from an overnight stay , pulled the Bat wagon right alongside and gave him 2 full blasts of ze olde "la cuccuratcha " which resulted in a little head coming out of the top bunk window and a "wat the f*** " response .Then Chris the kite man stuck his head round was also kipping and said " i,d recognize that tune anywhere" looks like i,d woken em all up , what u want twas gone 8.30am .
Anyway back to the sailing , took the opportunity of some coffee with kitto and the wind started to pick up , Batman and Robin rigged the 5.3m sails and got out the freestyle boards to get a quick hr in before the rest crew arrived thinking that if it kicked in anymore it would be a quick change to the wave boards , joined by Kitto we sailed for an hr but was ok on the outside but a bit dead closer to beach ,so when the rest of boys pulled in came in and re rigged to 6m ,5.7m for Robin, 6.5m for Kitto .
Nobby stuck the6.2m and Freestyle combo with Jones the Teeth going 6m and freestyle. Away we went and sailed for 2hrs with the wind gradually increasing into the afternoon and the waves getting bigger as the tide went out so as by 2pm we where all looking to change down Batman/Robin being lazy just swooped boards to wave boards and down hauled the rigs flat ,Nobby,Jones the teeth and Kitto went the full hog changing to 5.4m and small boards to be joined by Swansea Dan as a late arrival looking to test his new kit a 5.3superstar/maui project wave combo . Don the pic turned up and away we all went again for another few hrs trying to rip up the waves , sailed untill 4.30 when we where all getting tired by then waves where good but this opposite tack gets some getting used to with jumps felling awkward . Some of the locals where out really ripping in what is for them the right tack . Jones the teeth decided to get " one last wave " and as is always the case broke a mast , that means last two trips here have resulted in a broken mast each time . Swansea Dan carried on for a while as he'd arrived late the rest of us packed up ready for home leaving around 5pm after what eventually turned out to be a very good day although again NO-GALE. Think maybe though if it was really going off getting out on the wrong tack would be challenging as the only way out would be to jump over the waves .
